"How now shall this be compassed? Canst thou bring me to the party?"

-Stephano
The Tempest
Act 3, Scene 2

The Memorial Day Party started at about 8:00 a.m. The grill was going by 10:30. People ate a lot. They also drank a lot and played a lot and chatted a lot. (We laughed, we sang. We ate Smart Food and lime/tequila marinated turkey tenderloin.) The crowd dwindled at 3:00ish, but the courts didn't empty out until about 8:30.

Thanks to the folks who helped make it all happen, especially Lennie, Alex, Emmie, and Molly.

The next round robin, scheduled for Thursday, June 8 was very lightly subscribed and will most likely be rained out. It has been officially cancelled.

TENNIS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - We received a request from Alex Moot that volunteers are needed for the Special Olympics of Massachusetts tennis event to be held at Harvard o June 17th & 18th. There will be more than 100 participants. They are looking for people to do officiating, be lines people and serve as timers. This looks like a fun thing to do and is in keeping with our Outreach commitment. Murray Wheeler is leading the pack and has volunteered. I urge others to join him and contact to Emilie Smith or Alex at 781 672-5814 for full details.

The tounaments are upon us. Men's Doubles was scheduled for last weekend but was rained out. Women's Doubles are scheduled for next weekend. Sign-up sheets and draw sheets are posted on the porch bulletin board.

A reader kindly forwarded some stats from the Boston Globe: "(May) was the second rainiest month of May in Boston on record dating back to 1872. The total rainfall of 12.48 inches was also the fourth highest amount of rain in Boston of any month over the last 134 years."

Tom, our friend and club staff member, has some serious health problems and some...attendant financial difficulties. (He is currently on a medical leave of absence.) If you would like to help, please contact Len Singer, or a member of the staff. (Also, please check out the new website feature, the President's Corner.)

The Badminton and Tennis Club closed last week after completing a raft of tournaments. The B and T shares some members with the CTC. Some of our members did very well in the B and T's very competitive tournaments. Congratulations to Sarah Carter Clunan who won the Women's A Singles, to Esther Williams and Jessie von Hippel who won the Women's 50's Doubles, to Jim Baldwin (partnered with non-CTC member Lindsay Frazier) who was a finalist in the Mixed B Doubles, to Vicky McEvoy and Jeff Millman who were finalists in the Mixed 50's Doubles, and to Esther and Jessie (again, always) who were finalists in the Women's A Doubles. All of these tournaments had big draws and many strong players.

The club book is back from the printer and should be in your mailbox soon. Meanwhile, much of the book's information is now available on the website. (Thanks to Sheila and Ann for getting the info to us in a timely fashion.) Events, Rules, Governors and Committees are all updated, as is the New Members List. When is the first Round Robin?,

The website has a long overdue new feature: a Champions Page. Check it out.

The website has another new and important feature, the President's Corner. Check it out.

We still have the tournament draws (from 2001 to 2004) available on-line (including all of the results), thanks to the Java Kid. We are re-locating the links, however.

"On the court, tennis players exchange not only ground strokes but lots of information. It's a richly interactive sport, both verbally and non-verbally. If players communicate clearly, simply, and consistently, the game will proceed more quickly, and with less fuss and misunderstanding. Here are a few guidelines that can make the game more fun, friendly, and fair for all...."

We've had some requests to run Craig Lambert's piece, sampled above, on Tennis Communication. (We'd better leave this link up on the newspage permanently.)

Take a look

at what was happening at this time last year.

Some useful links:

And here's a link to the espn site, with pro ranking.

And here's a link to the French Open.

And a club member (let's call him Sol) suggested a link to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. The site is rich.

Website note:
The new club directory is, as we say, on the way. The website does have this year's info.

'Members', and' Reservation Requests' are not active parts of the site nowadays. 'Timelines' is for adepts.

Yearbook link will take you to the last newspage from 2005. From there you can see the whole of the Persistent Archive of last year's news.

Website Note: The time and temperature icon below is a link to a Boston weather site.

Website Note II: The honey-comb icon is also a link. It takes the clicker to an archive of all the past news pages so that you can read the news pages for the whole year (2004). The less-than link (<) next to the honeycomb icon will take you to the last issue of the newspage.
