It's like someone pushed a button on Labor Day: right away, snap, the weather is cool and the club is packed. Well, welcome back, frolickers. And how was the Vineyard?

The light fades on the back courts at about 7:15 nowadays, so the pressure is on prime-timers to reserve the front 2 courts. Please remember that the staff begins taking advance reservations at 8:00 a.m., not, please note, 7:59, or 7:53. Please don't try to coerce or coax or cajole or corrupt the staff into giving you a court before the appointed hour. ('I had to call early: my gerbil is hemorrhaging and I have to take her to the vet and I can't wait til 8:00 and I sooo want to play.')

Work proceeds apace on the entranceway. A retaining wall went in last week.

...and how, exactly, does this go?

Folks like coming in through the gate, just like the olden days:

Paula

Susanna and Craig

(In case you missed it, Craig, who is a writer and editor at Harvard Magazine, has a nifty piece on David Hemenway in the current issue. You can link to it here: David Hemenway)

Racquet stringing returns to the club... by way of Mike Zaisser. Mike offers next day service, low prices, and professional quality work. Drop your racquet off at the club, or call Mike at 617 780-1907.

Some tournaments have been cancelled. The Tennis Committee reports that tournaments without minimum numbers of entrees will not be held. The tournaments that will take place are:
  • Senior Mixed Doubles on 9-11 and 9-12;
  • Mixed Doubles on 10-2 and 10-3;
  • Men's Doubles on 9-25 and 9-26.

The Java Kid has been quick on the dare-we-say-it 'draw' and the tournament draws are available on-line:

Speaking of tournaments, we know that some club members do very well in tournaments at other clubs and leagues. We hear that Jessie Von Hippel and Esther Williams are members of a team called The Super Tie Breakers and have won the N.E. Sectionals. They will soon be off to Kansas City, of all places, to play in the Nationals. Go Jessie and go Esther.

Rick Rose's fabled doubles clinics are up and running. The clinics are well attended and big fun. They take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Check them out.

Take a look

at what was happening at this time last year.

We are leaving previous tournament draws up. And again we'll offer our thanks to our Anonymous Friend, the Java Kid, for posting them and keeping them up to date.

And here's the saga of 2002's tournaments (so's we can compare and contrast):

And the saga of the year before (we're mighty fancy here, and mighty grateful to the Java Kid for doing all this work):

Phew.

Here's a link to the espn site, with pro ranking.

And a club member (let's call him Sol) suggests a link to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. The site is rich.

As noted,the CTC book for 2004 is available. Much of the information in the book may now be found here on the website. The information is current. The waiting list for membership, as well as a list of new members is up to date. That information can be found through the 'FAQ' page. The Activites Page (round robins, tournaments, etc) is also up to date. The Rules page is also up to date and we have been urged to urge our readers to "review the rules and refresh their memories on some of the finer points."

'Members', and' Reservation Requests' are not active parts of the site nowadays. 'Timelines' is for adepts.

The Yearbook link will take you to the last newspage from 2003. From there you can see the whole of the Persistant Archive of last year's news.

Website Note: The time and temperature icon below is a link to a Boston weather site.

Website Note II: The honey-comb icon is also a link. It takes the clicker to an archive of all the past news pages so that you can read the news pages for the whole year (2004). The less-than link (<) next to the honeycomb icon will take you to the last issue of the newspage.
