"A great while ago the world begun,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
But that's all one, our play is done,"

-Twelfth Night
Act 5, Scene 1

"Well, I'm on the Vineyard where it's not raining, so I'll be an optimist and reserve a court for Sunday."
-An anonymous member of the optimistical persuasion.

Rain?

On Friday, the courts were very wet.

On Monday, they were drowned.

Billy and Rick plumbed extra pumps.

Billy deployed many pumps.

Phil exclaims.

The New Members party is scheduled for this coming Sunday, May 21. Please come and welcome our new members and see old friends.

The first round robin of the year is scheduled for May 24, a Wednesday. The meal will be catered.

Tom, our friend and club staff member, has some serious health problems and some...attendant financial difficulties. (He is currently on a medical leave of absence.) If you would like to help, please contact a member of the Board, or a member of the staff.

Time for a few quotes from our readers:

"The club is like the neighborhood playground: we all go and jump around and play with our friends and then we go home and do our homework. Sometimes it rains and we sit around, coloring, looking out the window. We are vexed. We pout."
-Anonymous II

"Remember last year? the rain in May?"

"We're getting all this rain out of the way now, and the rest of the season will be splendid.
-Did you say 'splendid?'
-Yes. 'Splendid.'"

The Badminton and Tennis Club closed last week after completing a raft of tournaments. The B and T shares some members with the CTC. Some of our members did very well in the B and T's very competitive tournaments. Congratulations to Sarah Carter Clunan who won the Women's A Singles, to Esther Williams and Jessie von Hippel who won the Women's 50's Doubles, to Jim Baldwin (partnered with non-CTC member Lindsay Frazier) who was a finalist in the Mixed B Doubles, to Vicky McEvoy and Jeff Millman who were finalists in the Mixed 50's Doubles, and to Esther and Jessie (again, always) who were finalists in the Women's A Doubles. All of these tournaments had big draws and many strong players.

The club book is back from the printer and should be in your mailbox soon. Meanwhile, much of the book's information is now available on the website. (Thanks to Sheila and Ann for getting the info to us in a timely fashion.) Events, Rules, Governors and Committees are all updated, as is the New Members List. When is the first Round Robin?,

The website has a long overdue new feature: a Champions Page. Check it out.

We still have the tournament draws (from 2001 to 2004) available on-line (including all of the results), thanks to the Java Kid. We are re-locating the links, however.

"On the court, tennis players exchange not only ground strokes but lots of information. It's a richly interactive sport, both verbally and non-verbally. If players communicate clearly, simply, and consistently, the game will proceed more quickly, and with less fuss and misunderstanding. Here are a few guidelines that can make the game more fun, friendly, and fair for all...."

We've had some requests to run Craig Lambert's piece, sampled above, on Tennis Communication. (We'd better leave this link up on the newspage permanently.)

Take a look

at what was happening at this time last year.

Some useful links:

And here's a link to the espn site, with pro ranking.

And a club member (let's call him Sol) suggested a link to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. The site is rich.

Website note:
The new club directory is, as we say, on the way. The website does have this year's info.

'Members', and' Reservation Requests' are not active parts of the site nowadays. 'Timelines' is for adepts.

Yearbook link will take you to the last newspage from 2005. From there you can see the whole of the Persistent Archive of last year's news.

Website Note: The time and temperature icon below is a link to a Boston weather site.

Website Note II: The honey-comb icon is also a link. It takes the clicker to an archive of all the past news pages so that you can read the news pages for the whole year (2004). The less-than link (<) next to the honeycomb icon will take you to the last issue of the newspage.
